I found the opening teaser unbearably clunky, one bare-bones exposition lump after another, summarizing the actually intriguing, moving, and important conversations instead of showing any of them. wtf? And Gregson was painfully out of character, showing up at their house?!? with groceries?!?
On the plus side, it was all an improvement from there. (except for Gregson, unfortunately, and his bizarre eagerness to excuse Sherlock from any responsibility for almost killing someone. What happened to the Gregson from "M"?)
I liked the more explicit presentation of Sherlock wanting to do right by Watson as well as his consistent acknowledgment of his actions having consequences. And I also liked Joan's all-but-invisible panic at the prospect of Sherlock going to prison; I heard her repeated dead-pan "you're not going to prison" "I'm not writing you letters" "Stop imagining me coming to visit you" as reassuring herself at least as much as him. And the hug as relief so great that she didn't care that it "would be rash" to reach out and give him a squeeze.
