Elementary's pilot was so strong that it has definitely been picked up as a new show and will air in autumn 2012.

THANK GOD, I was sort of dreading that they might not commission the series because the pilot was terrible or something.

The guy who reads the scripts had something to say on the show itself as well, so if you don't mind minor spoilers you should take a peek under the cut.

'"Elementary," the latest take on Sherlock Holmes, is also saddled with arrogant and self-satisfied lead character. That said, his shortcomings are more palatable thanks to the fact that his rakishness is charming enough and his motivations are fueled by nothing more than a desire to solve the crime -- alongside his 'Personal Recovery Assistant,' Joan Watson. There has been some press concern that this is a ripoff of the fantastic modernized BBC show, also based on of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous novels. While there are similarities, they appear to be limited to the usual Sherlockian traits found in any adaptation, so quibbling over one versus the other seems like a waste of time. The British version only airs three episodes per season and the third series isn't due for well over a year; while we wait for that, we might as well indulge in CBS' interpretation, especially since it's one of the strongest pilots on their slate.'

Good to know that it's not a copyright breach then! (:

Yeah, any version/adaptation of Sherlock Holmes is going to have certain similarities, being based on the same canon and all. And yes, there will even be story similarities (a big dog in Hound, Holmes and Moriarty having a confrontation that leads to one or both of them falling off something, etc), but... well, no one gets upset that nearly every version of Hamlet features Ophelia drowning, do they?

I actually find Holmes'* knotted scarf more similar to the BBC version, actually...
But, yeah... ~_~

*Oh, I wonder if they'll use last or first names? "Holmes and Watson" or "Sherlock and Joan"?

I sincerely hope it's the last names. This is really kind of pedantic of me, but the use of first names (and how it has spread through fandom so that people are referring to Holmes in every version as "Sherlock") grates. I know it's modern-day, but I lived 29 years exclusively saying and hearing "Holmes" and "Watson" so it knocks me out of the story every time (unless Mycroft says it).

That does make sense. That wouldn't bother me.

Uhg.. I'm sorry, I've seen and read too many things where men are referred to by their last names (and sometimes titles) and women are referred to by their first names, even if they have similar status (or even if the woman has more). This would drive me completely bugfuck...

I've actually gotten used to "Sherlock" and "John" in the BBC version. I do agree, however, that they should be called "Holmes" and "Watson" when referring to the other versions, especially ones specifically based on canon (like the Granada series and the RDJ/Law movies; and fan works based on canon itself, of course). With this upcoming series, I'm using "Holmes" and Watson" until/unless the series refers to them otherwise.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Elementary, I can't wait to see the American's adaption, I'm sure it'll be great and nothing like British version.

In my opinion the more Sherlock the better...
