Now, this show doesn't have what I would call good writing, plot-wise. it's redeeming grace (for me so far) has been the characters themselves. But sometimes I wonder if that's also just surface-deep, or if they're really trying for something more.

Here Sherlock talks about valuing the bonds of friendship over the ethos of recovery (thank god JLM has the acting chops to pull off a line like that). And just last episode, Joan talked about being Sherlock's friend. I wonder how far he'd be willing to go for her? (Spot the inconsistency! Last episode, Sherlock was oh-so-worried about a profiler thinking he'd never have friends, and Joan tosses it back at him. Here, he has a friend he feels strongly about.)

Go Joan for calling Sherlock out on misogyny.

I found Sherlock's eugenics comments startlingly cruel, especially since they seem to be trying to make this one stand apart by virtue of being more human as well as quirky.

Anyway, the two above things seemed inconsistent with his characterization so far. If they were supposed to be a reflection of the strain he was under, it was a bad device.

What was the line about eugenics? I missed it.

It was when he's checking out the kidnapped girl's twitter. The line is (at least tumblr tells me it is): “Sufficiently asinine as to constitute a valid argument for eugenics.” But personally I don't find it offensive, it's just his darker, British sense of humour. (He also made jokes about turning Clyde into soup, but he was hurt when Joan thought he meant it.)

Acting as if you'd eat a turtle you pick up on a case (which, hey, some people do consider the animal a source of meat) is not quite the same as implying a kidnapped girl whose life is in danger makes a case for sterilizing/killing the "lesser" types of people.
