I thought that was a riff on the famous riddle of the man hanging dead from the ceiling above a puddle of water in a room with no furniture and locked from the inside, which I always thought came from Sherlock Holmes, but google won't confirm this so I must be wrong.
It would be screamingly famous if it were canon. The hanging clown/man, puddle of water, riddle - only involves a block of melted ice, not dry ice under the bed. Curious where the dry ice one originated.

THAT WAS AN AMAZING EPISODE! For the new viewers the show might have picked up post Superbowl, hook, line, sinker! The temptation of Sherlock was nailbiting. He went through a great little character arc in this one. Loved Angus' impressive cameo. Joan was great, so badass when she confronted Rees. Nice reference to the books with the monograph on the hundred and something types of cigarette and cigar ash. Loads of stuff to love, ah!
I loved this episode so much! I suspected that Sherlock would stay strong and not cave to temptation, but the struggle was still so compelling to watch. His reaction when Rhys offered it to him made me feel so proud of him. I love this show for avoiding putting Joan in situations where she needs to be rescued. This would've been a good setup for it, but it was handled so beautifully, and Sherlock's obvious distress when he heard the gunshots, ahhhh <3
I also loved that even though it was obvious Sherlock knows about Joan lying to him, and she knows he knows, they didn't need to talk about it. What a simple, lovely end. The symbolism of Angus getting demolished, and Sherlock not bothering to finish putting him back together because he knows he won't need him again, so subtle and perfect :)
Nice observation about Angus, aww. One thing I just realised about the scene where Sherlock hears the gunshots: he yells 'Watson'. Not 'Joan'. I guess that's what he's used to calling her. It's probably what he'll always call her.
Much to like in this episode - hints of Sherlock's relationship with his father, references to classic cases, Joan making it perfectly clear where her priority lies, seeing them work a case free of NYPD oversight (painful as it is not to have Gregson in view), pulling the nose of that other show (can't seem to recall the title at the mo') and God knows John Hanna! One thing- as well handled as the drug issue was in this episode, I would like to see them move on a bit.
I'm trying to understand the fight with the drug dealer. My sound was muffled. Did the dealer say he slipped him some drugs or suggest that he needed to do some?
This episode was SO GOOD. Johnny was RADIATING tension during the whole thing, and I swear, it looked like he was going to burst when Rhys offered him the drugs. I also felt really terrible for Sherlock, feeling all that doubt cast on his one true armor -his intelligence- and then having to call his father... I felt for him so much. But I loved his fear for Joan when the shots fired. And Joan warning Rhys... don't hurt her charge or she'll fuck your shit UP. Loved it, loved them. One of my favourite episodes so far <3
the show is getting better and better) if it's even possible;) so glad Sherlock stayed sober! there were few moments i would strangle this ex-diler my own hands! my theory about Sherlock's father's existing is ruined now) and i'm interested, if Sherlock knows now that Watson staying with him on her free will? his father could ask him about her and there might be some unexpected implications of Sherlock's answer. unexpected for Sherlock, i mean.
There was so much to like in this episode -- but I'm heartily sick of addiction/recovery centered stories. When will the show move beyond this to focus on other, more interesting themes?
Finally got a chance to watch online. Loved the references to canon! And BAMF!WATSON!!! Although I guessed the villain after his first appearance. Ah, well... can't have everything!
Is anyone else wondering where the drugs went? Because I swear Sherlock put the bag in his pocket. And then... No more mention of it. If he had finished gluing Angus back up I'd think he'd put it inside. I worry he believed the thing about being better at deducing on drugs and is saving it for a truly dire and desperate case. Like inevitable kidnapping/other mortal danger of Joan.
Loved the episode! I can see that it could get old, but personally am still enjoying the addiction plot line. It draws good intensity out of Sherlock and Joan.
Now, this show doesn't have what I would call good writing, plot-wise. it's redeeming grace (for me so far) has been the characters themselves. But sometimes I wonder if that's also just surface-deep, or if they're really trying for something more.
Here Sherlock talks about valuing the bonds of friendship over the ethos of recovery (thank god JLM has the acting chops to pull off a line like that). And just last episode, Joan talked about being Sherlock's friend. I wonder how far he'd be willing to go for her? (Spot the inconsistency! Last episode, Sherlock was oh-so-worried about a profiler thinking he'd never have friends, and Joan tosses it back at him. Here, he has a friend he feels strongly about.)
Go Joan for calling Sherlock out on misogyny.
I found Sherlock's eugenics comments startlingly cruel, especially since they seem to be trying to make this one stand apart by virtue of being more human as well as quirky.
Anyway, the two above things seemed inconsistent with his characterization so far. If they were supposed to be a reflection of the strain he was under, it was a bad device.
It was when he's checking out the kidnapped girl's twitter. The line is (at least tumblr tells me it is): “Sufficiently asinine as to constitute a valid argument for eugenics.” But personally I don't find it offensive, it's just his darker, British sense of humour. (He also made jokes about turning Clyde into soup, but he was hurt when Joan thought he meant it.)
Acting as if you'd eat a turtle you pick up on a case (which, hey, some people do consider the animal a source of meat) is not quite the same as implying a kidnapped girl whose life is in danger makes a case for sterilizing/killing the "lesser" types of people.
Its funny I was really hoping that Sherlock would toss Rhys out the door (as well as throw that baggie into the fire)-but who knows what kind of damage that would have done?
